Review: Vinegar Tom

Image
Vinegar Tom by Caryl Churchill My rating: 5 of 5 stars This play was on one of my undergrad university modules and I have never forgotten about it. It is set during the 1600 witchcraft trials in England. Churchill makes implicit connections between the present (being the 1970s, when this play was written/ released) and the past in terms of women's rights and gender power dynamics. I think that the witch trials are such a strange concept, how could this have been done?! It is the ultimate way of out-casting those who do not conform. I think the play uses the idea of the witch trials really well to speak about present (1970s) society. I wonder if I would enjoy the actual play screening as much as I liked the ideas/ theory...
